Mom With Broken Ankle Continues To Make Money

It was my daughters 12th birthday and she wanted to celebrate with a few friends at a local skating rink. When we arrived, we traded our shoes for rentals and with a quickness, the girls were gone. I could see their happy smiles every time they came by the edge of the rink and could hear them giggling as they swung each other to go faster.

After a few laps, the girls invited me to skate with them.

I already had my skates on so I said, what the heck! Why not! I called for my daughter and off we went.

We even video taped each other while we skated to capture the moment!

After a couple of hours, the DJ invited everyone to play "Red Light, Green Light". I thought to myself, I could do this! I've only fallen once! Not bad considering I was my daughters age last time I was on roller-skates.

The first green light came on... then the red. Everyone fell to the floor! (Apparently that's how the young kids "stop" for the game.) It looked painful, so I decided to stay standing. Although I had a hard time stopping, I managed!

The second green light came on a few seconds longer....then the red.

I TRIED TO STOP... BUT I COULDN'T!

Suddenly, it was as if everything moved in slow motion and then the silence kicked in. I felt my right foot continue to slide behind me, twist, and that's when I lost my balance. I fell on my bottom which was cushioned by my right ankle! Or was it cushioned?

The silence was broken when I heard the SNAP...then the POP!

I immediately felt my foot turn numb and saw it dangle from the ankle when I tried to stand on it!

OH~~~ THE PAIN!

I stayed down and I scooted off the rink to a safe corner and called for help.

My husband rushed me to emergency and we soon found out I had 3 different brakes in my right leg...all at the ankle area. After a four hour stay, my bones were set and although I needed surgery, it had to wait due to the massive swelling. It was put on hold indefinitely.

In the meantime, elevate, elevate, and no weight! It took three weeks for the swelling to go down just enough to move forward with surgery. Nine screws and a plate later, it was another 6 weeks of more elevation, elevation and no weight!

Two weeks ago I was given the green light (no pun intended) to attend physical therapy 1-2 times a week for 4-6 weeks.

Now, can you imagine if I had a JOB?

I've been out of commission for 9 weeks and NOW I had to attend physical therapy. Let's see, that's about 15 weeks at less than a 100%.

NO WAY could I get myself ready, 3 kids ready and drive to work in traffic (I couldn't use my driving foot, it was broken or healing), all before 8:00am! I would have to use up all my sick and vacation time, and possibly loose my job!

Who am I kidding!

Of course I would loose my job!

My job would not be guaranteed upon my return. This was not a workers comp case. I hurt myself on my time! And face it, during these economic hardships, the company would just replace me or delegate my responsibility to others thus realizing my job was never necessary!

Ah, but wait!

Here's the beautiful part! I work from home! I had the choice and made the choice to take time off from my home business to take care of myself. Isn't that beautiful! I don't report to a boss or worry about employees. I don't put any undue stress on myself for "missing" work.

I'm not an employee!

Bottom line is although unemployment is at its highest, you have 3 choices. 1) You can be a victim, blame everyone for your hardships and declare bankruptcy. 2) You can struggle, get a job and fall back to what is familiar but not enjoyable. Or 3) commit yourself to a home based business, set goals and map out a plan to succeed!

Your goals must be a decision and they must have meaning, otherwise they're simply a wish. I have a vision, not a job!

I love working from home giving me more time with my family and friends!

Looking back now, I see my skating accident as an affirmation to take control of my life and start living! No longer am I willing to trade my time for money!

I'm proud to be a stay at home mom with a successful home based business who values my time.
